June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on one of Australia’s most common – yet preventable – cancers.
With over 15,000 Australians diagnosed each year, raising awareness around prevention, early detection, and lifestyle choices has never been more important.
Know the Risk Factors
While anyone can develop bowel cancer, some factors may increase your risk:
- Age (particularly over 45)
- Family history of bowel cancer
- A diet high in red and processed meats
- Low physical activity
- Smoking and high alcohol consumption
- Obesity
- Inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis
Prevention Starts with Lifestyle
Simple changes can significantly reduce your risk:
- Eat a balanced diet rich in fibre, fruits, and vegetables
- Limit red and processed meats
- Stay active – aim for at least 30 minutes of movement daily
- Avoid smoking and reduce alcohol
- Maintain a healthy weight
Bowel cancer often develops without symptoms in the early stages. This is why regular screening is vital, particularly if you’re over 45 or have a family history. The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program provides free at-home test kits for eligible Australians — a simple test that could save your life.
How Colon Hydrotherapy Can Support Gut Health
While it’s not a treatment for cancer, colon hydrotherapy (colonic irrigation) may assist in maintaining a clean and balanced digestive tract. By supporting detoxification and promoting regular bowel movements, colonics can be a proactive addition to your overall gut health routine.
Get Involved This Red Apple Day
On June 18th, we’re supporting Red Apple Day to raise funds and awareness for Bowel Cancer Australia. Look out for the red apple signs at our clinic and scan the QR code if you’d like to make a donation to support ongoing research and patient support.
Let’s work together to spread awareness, encourage healthy habits, and support early detection. Because prevention starts with knowledge.
